Her cousin Charles Chibana is also a judoka. He represented Brazil at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the 2020 Grand Prix event in Oberwart, Austria. Her other cousin Mike Chibana also competed in judo at junior international level and represented Brazil at the 2011 World Junior Championships in Cape Town, South Africa. She took up judo at age four and began practising at a high performance level at the Associacao Vila Carrao gym in Sao Paulo, Brazil. (ecp.org.br, 18 Sep 2018)
:
She began focusing on competitive judo after competing at the world junior championships. "I believe that after my first world juniors, which I thought was the biggest event in my life, I saw judo differently, more competitively. From that moment I decided to invest everything in it, to get a medal and represent my country." (ecp.org.br, 18 Sep 2018)
:
"A champion is not the one who has never fallen, but the one who knew to stand up and move on." (ecp.org.br, 10 Jun 2017)

JUDO FAMILY
Much of her family has taken part in judo. Her cousins Charles and Mike have also represented Brazil and she has a judo mat in her house, which is regularly used at family gatherings. "Most of my family have lived the judoka's life and, like it or not, it is a common language in my family. Everyone, from my seven-year-old cousin to the 30-years-olds, are able to talk about judo and know what it is. It is a family business." (ecp.org.br, 20 Sep 2018; hojeemdia.com.br, 12 Mar 2014)

SPORT AND STUDY
She has studied nursing at the Sao Camilo University Centre in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She says she wanted to study a course that would take her away from sport. "I wanted to get out of the sporting environment a little, I wanted to meet different people, talk to people from other backgrounds and evolve in other ways, not being stuck in the same environment forever. I started taking nursing at random and ended up enjoying it, the coolest thing about the profession is taking care of others." (ecp.org.br, 20 Sep 2018)
