She took up judo at age four. (teamusa.org, 01 Apr 2020)

Her father had signed up her older brother to a judo class, and after pleading to try it out herself, she was allowed to join the class. "After three weeks of just watching and constantly asking my dad to let me try too, my dad talked with the coaches and they agreed to let me give it a go. I loved it! I loved learning something so cool and different and absolutely loved getting to fight. It was really fun for me and after entering and winning my first local tournament later that year, the four-year-old me officially fell in love with the sport." (teamusa.org, 01 Apr 2020)

"Once I get to the venue, I like to get on the tournament mats instead of just hanging out in the warm-up area the whole time, to get a feel for the arena and to really focus and zone in." (teamusa.org, 01 Apr 2020)

"There are no quarters or second halves for you to come back from in judo, and there are no timeouts for you to talk with your coaches and switch your game plan up in the middle of a match. You go on the tatami and fight your ass off for four minutes, or until a winner is declared. That can mean a 15-minute match that went into overtime you grind out, or just as easily, a 15-second match that was lost because of a critical mistake or miscalculation." PARENTAL SUPPORT
She says she owes much to her father Steve Papadakis, who has served as her coach and guided her since her early days in the sport. "My dad is the one who has really been with me through it all. I never had a coach who was an Olympian or world champion, or was from some big name, high-end dojo. I grew up going to a small hometown dojo for about eight years and then my dad opened his own dojo, and this is where I trained from the age of 12 to 19. My dad may have been an average judo player, but he is a top-notch coach. He did his homework and always made it happen for me, and he and I came into the judo world as a team. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for him working with me since day one." (teamusa.org, 01 Apr 2020)

BASEMENT DOJO
During the lockdown for the COVID-19 pandemic, she was able to keep training using specialist judo equipment from her family's dojo, which had closed. "We used to own a dojo in Waukegan [IL, United States of America], and while it recently closed, all the equipment was in storage. We carried 10 tatamis into our basement and cleaned them, and my dad made a DIY squat rack. We did everything, we made like a basement gym. I'm thankful to have that at least, because a lot of my [judo] friends are older and live in apartments and not everybody has a full basement to use [to train]." (thenationalherald.com, 08 May 2020)
