He was introduced to the sport at age nine as both his father and grandfather practised judo. (santacruzsentinel.com, 18 Jun 2016)

He didn't like the sport at first but soon began to enjoy the physicality and the formality of martial arts. "I really hated it. Someone's trying to throw you all the time. Plus, there's the respect factor. I grew up with American sports, where I could talk to my friends, and in judo you can't do that. There's a respect factor. You have to bow to your sensei every time. It wasn't a place I could go and have fun with my friends." (santacruzsentinel.com, 18 Jun 2016)

RELOCATION
In late 2020 he moved from California to Boston, MA, United States of America, to work with coach Jimmy Pedro at Pedro's Judo Center ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "When I came to Boston last year [2019] to train before the Olympics, I realised that in order for me to reach my full potential, I would have to move here full-time. Right now there are a lot of holes in my game, and being able to work with Jimmy [Pedro], Big Jim [Pedro Sr.] and Travis [Stevens] on a daily basis will clean my judo up and take me to the next level. Finally, just being around a group of athletes with the same mindset and goals as me is extremely important and will help get me through the tougher days. I don't just want to make an Olympic team this time around, I want a medal. I know my best chance of doing that is here at Pedro's Judo." (pedrosjudo.com, 08 Dec 2020)
