His older sister Nora Gjakova has represented Albania and Kosovo in judo. She ranked ninth for Kosovo in the -57kg category at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and won gold in the -57kg category at the 2018 European Championships in Tel Aviv, Israel.
