In 2017 she moved up from the 48kg weight class to the 57kg category. After she claimed victory in 48kg at a national event in Japan in 2016, she had a growth spurt the following year and had difficulty losing weight to remain in the 48kg category, collapsing from exhaustion during the weight-loss process. She was born to Korean parents in Himeji, Japan, after her grandparents had initially moved to the country.
