She wanted to lose weight and be active like her school friends. She realised she had the potential to make a career in the sport when, at age 14, she was invited to a tryout with the national team. "Coach Ronaldo Veitia asked me if I had brought my kimono with me, and he immediately sent me to compete. My sister was nervous and asked me if I really wanted to be there, because all the girls looked stronger. The next day she returned just to bring me some clothes because I stayed with the national team. Since then I have only come back home to visit or on holidays."
