He began judo at age six (vladsimionescu.ro, 08 Apr 2016)
:
He comes from a sporting family, as his mother played handball and his father played rugby. "Since I was little, my parents found I had enough energy to keep them busy and wanted me to use it in a constructive way. From age six to eight-and-a-half I practised judo, and then decided to try other sports to test my limits. I played handball for a few months, and then rugby caught my full attention. For a year-and-a-half I gave up judo, looking for success in other sports, but I did not find it. My heart and my mind stayed in the judo gym, so I went back and got serious."
