He comes from a sporting family, as his mother played handball and his father played rugby. "Since I was little, my parents found I had enough energy to keep them busy and wanted me to use it in a constructive way. From age six to eight-and-a-half I practised judo, and then decided to try other sports to test my limits. I played handball for a few months, and then rugby caught my full attention. For a year-and-a-half I gave up judo, looking for success in other sports, but I did not find it. My heart and my mind stayed in the judo gym, so I went back and got serious." He said he was "immensely satisfied" to return to the Olympic Games at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. He had competed at the 2012 Games in London, but was ruled out of contention for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro due to injury. "Being in Tokyo means a lot. It is the culmination of the work done throughout my career and the recovery period after the injuries I suffered. I am immensely satisfied. Even if I didn't have a brilliant world championships [in 2021], it will definitely be better in Tokyo.
