General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China made their Olympic debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney, where they were eventually ranked fifth. They lost to Argentina in the bronze medal match at Athens 2004 but their high point at the Olympic Games came as hosts in 2008, when they made a run all the way to the final only to be beaten 2-0 by the Netherlands. They placed sixth at the 2012 Games in London, and did not progress from the group stage at Rio 2016 after recording one win, two draws, and two defeats.

The Chinese team's sole title at the Champions Trophy came in 2002. They were beaten finalists in 2003 and 2006, and placed third in 2005. Their fourth-place finish at the 2018 Champions Trophy was their best result at the tournament since 2008. At the World Cup, the People's Republic of China struggled to a 16th-place finish in 2018. Their highest finish at the World Cup in third, which they secured in 2002.

The People's Republic of China finished on the podium at each edition of the Asian Games between 1990 and 2018, winning consecutive gold medals in 2002, 2006, and 2010. Their eight-medal haul at the Asian Games also includes two silver and three bronze.
