General Interest

General
Angola booked their ticket for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo by winning the 2019 African Qualification Tournament, beating Senegal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a three-team round-robin format.

Angola's women made their Olympic debut at the 1996 Games, where they lost all three of their group matches but defeated the United States of America in the seventh-place game. At Rio 2016, Angola qualified for the knockout stage with group victories against Romania and Montenegro, but their campaign came to an end in the quarterfinals as they were beaten by eventual champions the Russian Federation.

Angola have appeared at every edition of the world championship since 1990, with a best result of seventh in 2007. At the most recent tournament in 2019, the team won two matches out of five in the preliminary round and did not progress to the main round. They were eventually ranked 15th.

At continental level Angola have finished on the podium at each edition of the African championship since 1989, claiming 13 gold medals in that time. They have been similarly dominant at the African Games, winning gold at seven of the eight editions of the Games since 1991.
