General Interest

General
Egypt qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games with victory over Tunisia in the gold medal match at the 2020 African Championship. Tokyo is Egypt's seventh Olympic campaign, with the team appearing at every edition of the Games since 1992 except for London 2012. Their best result came in 1996 in Atlanta, where they finished sixth. At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, they secured a one-point win over Sweden and drew with hosts Brazil in the group stage, but defeats to Germany, Slovenia, and Poland meant they did not progress to the quarterfinals.

The Egyptian team's best finish at the world championship is fourth, which they posted in 2001. They did not make the top 10 for the next eight editions of the tournament, but in 2019 they were ranked eighth out of 24 teams. Egypt hosted the 2021 World Championship and made it all the way to the quarterfinals, where they were knocked out by eventual champions Denmark on penalties.

Egypt's victory at the 2020 African Championship was their seventh title and 20th podium finish at the tournament since 1979. It is a similar story at the African Games, with the Egyptian team winning four straight gold medals between 2003 and 2015. Their bid for a fifth consecutive gold medal at the 2019 Games ended with defeat to Angola in the final.

Egypt won gold and silver at the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and 2014, respectively.
