Her partner Kelly Dulfer has represented the Netherlands in handball. She was part of the team that won gold at the 2019 World Championships in Japan, and played alongside Smits for Borussia Dortmund during the 2020/21 Handball-Bundesliga Frauen season. Her brother Jorn and Kay have both represented the Netherlands in handball, and were teammates at TTH Holstebro during the 2020/21 Danish Handbold Ligaen season. Her parents Gino and Cecille [nee Leenen] have also represented the Netherlands in the sport. Her mother Cecille made over 100 appearances for the Netherlands, while her father Gino has gone on to work as a coach at club level in the German Handball-Bundesliga Frauen.
