He says he experienced mixed emotions when Portugal secured qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo one month after the death of his international and club teammate Alfredo Quintana in February 2021. "Beyond being my teammate in both national and club, he was a close friend. It has been the strangest feeling I have ever had. I had never celebrated a victory with a mix of happiness and sadness at the same time due to what we have lived in the previous weeks. There were some moments in which we hugged each other and laughed and suddenly we were all crying. He will always be with us.
