His father worked as a physical education teacher and introduced him to sports at a young age. He tried a number of sports before choosing to focus on handball. "Handball was not my first option as my father gave tennis lessons and I was never focused on just one sport. I practised sports such as fencing, gymnastics and tennis. Finally, some friends asked me if I wanted to try handball and I got hooked in a different way. Later I decided to practise handball as a way of living." (menshealth.pt, 17 Dec 2019)
