He says he would likely have followed his family into the life of a sailor had he not chosen to pursue handball. "My grandfather, my father and my uncle have all been seamen. That leaves a trace. When you are little you accept that people are away for a long period of time, but when you are an adult you see it as something really hard. I have not seen a job in which you sacrifice your life so much, and not always in the best conditions. I have absolute respect for the people working at sea. For a person who wants his family to prosper, to leave for so many months is hard. When I was 12 and I saw it was my turn [to become a sailor] I knew I could not be one even for fifteen days. Besides, I am very tall and the cabins in a ship are very small. So, if handball had not crossed my life, I might have had to be a sailor out of necessity.
