General Interest

General
RETIREMENT RETHINK
In 2019 she had contemplated retiring from the sport after she lost her LPGA Tour card. Having decided to continue, she won her first major championship at the 2020 AIG Women's British Open at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland after playing on the Symetra Tour that season. The victory reinstated her LPGA Tour card on a two-year exemption. "I have had to face many obstacles on the way, but I knew what I was capable of achieving. I nearly quit playing in 2019. Thank god I didn't." (livemint.com, 23 Aug 2020; golfdigest.com, 23 Aug 2021)

LYME DISEASE
During her rookie season on the LPGA Tour in 2015 she began to have health concerns, and in 2018 was diagnosed with Lyme disease. "It's honestly something I haven't really talked about a lot before, but my rookie year, I started having a lot of health issues. We didn't even know what it was. It took a total of about 20 doctor visits three years later to figure out that I had Lyme disease. At that point it was so chronic that I had just been struggling a lot with fatigue. For me to regain all my energy I lost like 25 pounds [11.3 kilograms] and had to regain all of that and get back to where I was before, and it was just a struggle." (lpga.com, 03 Jun 2021; skysports.com, 24 Aug 2020)

HERITAGE
Born in Boston, MA, United States of America, she moved to Weingarten, Germany, at a young age and has held dual US and German citizenship since age 13. After she attended school in Germany, she moved back to the United States of America to attend the University of Southern California in 2010. "I have dual citizenship because I was born in the US, but lived in Germany almost my whole life. Also my grandfather, my dad's father, is Bulgarian, so that's where the name comes from. My grandparents live half in Bulgaria and half in Austria." (golfmonthly.com, 10 Feb 2021; usctrojans.com, 23 Aug 2020; ladieseuropeantour.com, 01 Jan 2012)
