Born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Somali parents, he moved to London, England, as a child. He represented England in six matches at youth level before he was invited by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to attend a training camp for Saudi footballers born to foreign parents. In 2017 he announced his intention to begin representing Saudi Arabia. "They [Saudi Arabian Football Federation] knew I was born in Jeddah. My parents grew up in Saudi when I was a kid, so it wasn't a difficult decision.
