General Interest

General
Fencing is Italy's most successful sport at the Olympic Games, although they are yet to win an Olympic medal in women's team sabre. They finished fourth on their Olympic debut in the event at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, beating France in the quarterfinals, before losing to Ukraine in the semifinals and the United States of America in the bronze medal match. The team secured their place in Tokyo by being ranked among the top four nations in the world rankings.

Italy ended a 14-year wait for a world title at the 2017 World Championships in Leipzig, triumphing against the Republic of Korea in the final. They won gold when the event made its debut at the world championships in 1999, and again in 2003, also adding a silver medal behind the US team in 2000. The Italian women finished fourth at the two most recent editions of the tournament in 2018 and 2019.

Italy have twice been crowned champions of Europe since 2011, with their most recent title coming courtesy of a victory over the Russian Federation in the final of the 2017 European Championships in Tbilisi. Similar to their performances at the world championships in recent years, Italy finished fourth at the two most recent editions of the European championships in 2018 and 2019, losing the bronze medal match to France on both occasions.
