General Interest

General
France booked their place at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo courtesy of their top-four world ranking. The French women competed in team sabre when the event made its debut at the 2008 Games in Beijing, losing to the United States of America in the bronze medal match. Eight years later at Rio 2016, the French team failed to record a victory and ended the tournament ranked eighth from eight teams.

France have enjoyed more success in the event at the world championships, taking 11 medals from 19 participations, including three world titles. Their most recent title came at the 2018 World Championships in Wuxi, People's Republic of China, defeating the hosts on route to the final where they overcame the Russian Federation. They again faced the Russian team in the final of the 2019 edition in Budapest, but failed to defend their title, going down 45-40 in the gold medal match.

The French women have also secured a number of podium finishes at the European championships. They returned home with a medal from six consecutive editions of the tournament between 2014 and 2019, winning bronze at the last three editions, including victories over Italy in the bronze medal match in both 2018 and 2019.
