General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China secured their spot at Tokyo 2020 as the top-ranked Asian team outside the world's top four nations. Tokyo will be their second Olympic Games after debuting in the event in Beijing in 2008. On home soil at the 2008 Games, the Chinese team beat Poland and France before facing Ukraine for the gold medal. They raced to a 25-15 lead in the final but were reeled in by the Ukrainian team and at 44-44, the deciding point had to be replayed, with Ukraine ultimately prevailing 45-44.

The Chinese women's sabre team have competed in 18 editions of the world championships, but are yet to win a gold medal. They took silver behind Italy in 2003, and bronze behind France and gold medallists Ukraine in 2009. They finished ranked eighth at five consecutive editions of the tournament between 2011 and 2015 before breaking the trend with a 14th-place finish in 2017. At the two most recent editions of the tournament in 2018 and 2019, they were back to familiar territory, finishing eighth on both occasions.

At continental level, the People's Republic of China have battled it out with the Republic of Korea in the final of each edition of the Asian Games since the event was introduced at the 2002 Games. The Chinese team emerged victorious from the first three finals [2002, 2006 and 2010], but the Korean team gained a measure of revenge by taking the title at the two most recent editions of the Games [2014 and 2018].
