The United States of America qualified for Tokyo 2020 as one of the world's top four ranked nations. They are competing at their 10th Olympic Games, and have appeared at every Games to have featured women's team foil except one [1980] since 1972.

The US team have won a single Olympic medal, which was silver at the 2008 Games after defeat to the Russian Federation in the final. At the most recent Games to include the event, London 2012, they were beaten in the quarterfinals by the Republic of Korea before going on to rank sixth overall. They came close to the podium at the 2000 Games in Sydney, but were defeated by Germany in the bronze medal match.

In recent years the United States of America have enjoyed success at the world championships, winning a medal at all three editions between 2017 and 2019. In 2017 they lost out to Italy in the final, before gaining a measure of revenge to claim gold in 2018 with victory over the Italians. At the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, the US team were beaten semifinalists at the hands of the Russian Federation, before clinching bronze with a win against France.

They are a dominant force at continental level, claiming 13 consecutive titles at the Pan American championships between 2007 and 2019.
