General
The ROC women's foil team secured their spot in Tokyo as one of the world's top four ranked teams. Previously, the Russian Federation competed in the event at four Olympic Games between 1996 and 2012. After sixth and fifth place rankings at the 1996 and 2000 Games, respectively, the Russian team achieved podium finishes at the two most recent editions of the Games to feature the event. At the 2008 Games in Beijing, they defeated Egypt in the quarterfinals and Italy in the semifinals before securing gold with a 28-11 victory over the United States of America in the final. Four years later in London, they again reached the final, but this time came up short, losing 45-31 to the Italian team.

The Russian Federation has five world titles in the event. Their most recent title came at the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, where they overcame the United States of America in the semifinal before claiming gold in a narrow 43-42 victory over Italy in the final. At continental level, the Russian team holds the record for total medals at the European championships [19] and their tally of six gold medals is second only to Italy [12].
