General Interest

General
With four gold medals, a total only matched by the Soviet Union, Italy are seeking to become the nation with the most women's team foil titles in Olympic history. Their seven medals overall is also the joint most of all time at the Olympic Games, equalled by Hungary. Italy's four gold medals have all come within the last five Olympic Games to include the event, and the most recent of those titles was at the 2012 Games. They qualified for Tokyo as one of the world's top four ranked nations.

At London 2012 the Italian team were comfortable winners over hosts Great Britain and then France, before they overcame the Russian Federation 45-31 in the final. It was a measure of revenge over the Russian team, who were victorious against Italy in a tight semifinal at Beijing 2008, before the Italians secured bronze. Italy were bronze medallists at the first Olympic Games to feature women's team foil, on home soil in 1960. They did not return to the podium until 1988, when they claimed silver in Seoul, but then won three consecutive golds between 1992 and 2000.

Italy's world championship titles [16] and total medals [34] are both the most of any nation at the world championships. They reached the final at each of their appearances [10] at the tournament between 2009 and 2019, winning gold six times in that period. However, they were runners-up in both 2018 and 2019, losing out to the United States of America and the Russian Federation, respectively.
