General
The ROC qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo as one of the world's top four ranked teams. Previously, the Russian Federation have been the only nation to have competed in all five editions of the Olympic Games in which the event has been contested. Their tally of two Olympic titles and four total medals is the most of any nation in either category.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, the Russian Federation recovered from defeat against Romania in the semifinals to clinch bronze with a 37-31 victory over Estonia. They claimed back-to-back titles at the 2000 Games in Sydney and 2004 Games in Athens, with victories in the final against Switzerland and Germany, respectively. The Russian team also took bronze in the inaugural women's team epee competition in 1996 in Atlanta.

The Russian Federation won silver behind the People's Republic of China at the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, losing out in the final by one point, 29-28. This was the first time the team had stepped on the podium at the world championships since 2014, when they claimed their second successive world title. The Russian women were also runners-up at the most recent edition of the European championships in 2019, behind Poland, and the last time they won the title at the tournament was in 2012.
