General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China have competed at four of the five Olympic Games in which women's team epee has been contested, and qualified for Tokyo 2020 as one of the world's top four ranked nations. Their tally of three total medals at the Games is second only to the Russian Federation's haul of four.

They won gold at the 2012 Games in London, where they defeated Germany in the quarterfinals before overcoming the Russian Federation 20-19 in sudden death of a tight semifinal on route to the gold medal match. In the final, they were locked at 9-9 with the Korean team after four of the nine bouts, before the People's Republic of China took control and eased to a 39-25 victory to claim their first Olympic title.

Four years later in Rio, they again reached the final but fell just short of retaining their title as they lost 44-38 to Romania. Their only other Olympic medal, a bronze, was won on debut in Sydney in 2000.

The Chinese team have also been consistent medallists at the world championships. They reached the podium at six out of the last seven editions of the tournament, and claimed gold in both 2015 and 2019. The team have been dominant in the event at continental level, reaching the final at each edition of the Asian Games to feature the event since 1990, and won the title on five occasions in that period. They have also been dominant at the Asian championships, but had to settle for silver at the most recent edition in 2019, following back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018.
