General Interest

General
The United States of America have won two Olympic medals in the men's team sabre event, with their most recent, a silver, coming in 2008. In 2012, the last time the event was contested at the Olympic Games, they were knocked out at the quarterfinal stage by the Russian Federation and lost classification matches to the Chinese team and Belarus to rank eighth overall. The US team booked their ticket to Tokyo as the highest ranked team from the Americas zone outside the world's top four nations.

They have made 16 Olympic appearances since 1920, and won the first of their two medals in London in 1948, when they claimed bronze. At Beijing 2008 they beat Hungary and the Russian Federation in tight matches - 45-44 on both occasions - to set up a final against France. They had to settle for silver after a 45-37 defeat to the French team.

The United States of America have not won a world championship medal in 29 appearances since 1967. They came closest to the podium in 2017, when they lost the bronze medal match 45-40 to Italy. At the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, they lost to Romania in the round of 16 and went on to place 10th overall.

The US team are firmly dominant at continental level. They won 14 consecutive titles at the Pan American championships between 2006 and 2019, and all five Pan American Games gold medals on offer from 2003 to 2019.
