General Interest

General
The Republic of Korea are the reigning Olympic and world champions in the men's team sabre event. Their gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London was the Korean team's first Olympic medal and came on their third appearance at the Games, following their debut on home soil at Seoul 1988 and the 1996 Games in Atlanta. At both appearances before 2012 they did not progress past the first round. The Republic of Korea qualified for Tokyo as one of the top four ranked teams in the world.

Their historic run to the gold medal in London saw them defeat Germany and Italy to set up a final with Romania. They were much too strong for the Romanian team, triumphing 45-26 to claim their place atop the Olympic podium.

The Republic of Korea have been dominant at world level in recent years, triumphing at the world championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019. At the 2019 edition in Budapest, they beat Romania in the quarterfinals and comfortably dispatched Germany 45-22 in the last four before meeting the hosts Hungary in the final. In a thrilling contest, the Korean team prevailed 45-44 to claim their third world championship title. They also beat Hungary in the final in 2017, and defeated Italy in the 2018 final. They have made a rapid rise to supremacy at the world championships, as before they secured bronze in 2013, they had not won a medal at the tournament in 19 appearances since 1981.

They are similarly dominant at continental level, and are the reigning champions at both the Asian championships and Asian Games.
