General Interest

General
Japan qualified for Tokyo as hosts and are competing in the men's team sabre event at the Olympic Games for the first time.

The Japanese team have made 30 world championship appearances since 1969 but have struggled to make a significant impression at the tournament. Their highest ranking of sixth came on their debut in 1969, and since then they have not placed inside the top 10. At the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, they defeated Thailand 45-42 before losing 45-24 to the Russian Federation in the last 16. In the classification rounds they recorded a win over Canada and defeats to the US team and the People's Republic of China to finish 12th overall.

Japan have had more success in continental competition. They won seven Asian Games medals between 1974 and 2010, including one gold in 1978. They came third on home soil at the 2019 Asian Championships in Chiba, beating the People's Republic of China 45-39 in the bronze medal match after the Republic of Korea defeated them in the semifinals.
