General Interest

General
Hungary have won 10 Olympic gold medals in men's team sabre, more than any other nation. They dominated the event for more than three decades, winning seven consecutive titles between 1928 and 1960, and their closest rivals for gold medals are Italy and the Soviet Union, on four each. The Italians are the only team to boast more total Olympic medals [20] than Hungary's 16. However, they have not stood on the Olympic podium at their last three appearances, and won their last medal [silver] in 1996 and their most recent title in 1988.

Hungary secured their place in Tokyo as one of the world's top four ranked teams, and are returning to the Olympic Games after missing the last Games to feature men's team sabre in 2012. The last time they competed in 2008, they lost by a single point in the quarterfinals to the US team, before a defeat to the People's Republic of China and a win over Egypt saw they finish seventh.

It is a similar story at the world championships, where Hungary have also amassed the most titles of any nation, but have only won gold once this century [2007]. They have, however, been contenders at the tournament in recent years, and finished in the top three at each of the last four editions. On home soil at the 2019 edition in Budapest, they came close to claiming the title but were edged 45-44 by the Republic of Korea in a thrilling final.

At continental level, they won the European championship title in 2018, and silver at the tournament in 2019 after a 45-43 defeat to Germany.
