General Interest

General
Egypt are competing in the men's team sabre event at the Olympic Games for the first time since 2008. They qualified for Tokyo as the highest ranked team from the Africa zone outside the world's top four nations.

At the 2008 Games in Beijing the Egyptians finished eighth out of eight teams. They lost their first match against the top-seeded French team that went on to win gold, and then were defeated by Belarus and Hungary in the classification round. Beijing was the second time Egypt had competed on the Olympic stage, after an appearance at the 1952 Games in Helsinki.

Egypt's best world championship result is third, which they achieved in 1947, 1949 and 1950. However, they were absent from the world championships from 1950 until 2003, and in eight appearances at the tournament this century they have not placed higher than 15th. They finished with that ranking at the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, where they beat Argentina before losing to hosts Hungary in the last 16. In the classification rounds they lost out to the Chinese team and Ukraine before defeating Canada to secure 15th position.

At continental level, Egypt have been dominant in recent years, winning the last two African championship titles as well as the most recent two All-Africa Games gold medals.
