General Interest

General
The United States of America men's foil team earned their place at the 2020 Olympic Games on the basis of their position atop the 2020/21 world ranking list.

At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, they lost to eventual gold medallists the Russian Federation in the semifinal [45-41] but bounced back with a big win [45-31] over Italy in the bronze medal contest. The bronze in Brazil was the team's first Olympic medal since they finished third in 1932.

They enter the Olympic tournament as the reigning world champions, having taken their first title at the 2019 edition of the event. The US team also claimed medals at the world championships in 2017 and 2018, finishing second on both occasions.

The US team has long been the dominant force at both the Pan American championships and Pan American Games. At the former, they won every title between 2008 and 2019, 12 in total, and in the latter, they won a medal at every Games since 1951, and gold at the past four editions.
