General
The ROC secured their spot in the men's team foil competition in Tokyo as one of the world's top four ranked nations. Previously, the Russian Federation competed at five editions of the Olympic Games between 1996 and 2016, winning gold on two occasions.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, the Russian team defeated Great Britain and the United States of America on their way to the gold medal match against France. In the final they overcame their French opponents 45-41 to add another Olympic title to their first gold secured at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. The Russian Federation's only other medal, a bronze, was achieved at Athens 2004, where they lost out to Italy in the semifinal but bounced back with a 45-38 victory over the United States of America to finish on the podium.

The Russian Federation have competed at 21 editions of the world championships since 1993, but despite stepping onto the podium on four occasions, they are yet to win a gold medal. Their most recent medals were won at the 2015 and 2018 world championships, winning silver and bronze, respectively.
