General Interest

General
The men's foil team from Hong Kong, China are making their fourth appearance at the Olympic Games. They secured a place at the Tokyo Games thanks to their position as the top team from Asia and Oceania on the 2020/2021 world ranking list.

In their three previous Olympic participations, their highest rank is ninth achieved at the 1976 Games in Montreal. Their most recent appearance was at the 1988 Games in Seoul where they finished 16th.

In 21 appearances at the world championships between 1981 and 2018, Hong Kong, China never managed to secure a top-10 finish. That all changed at the most recent edition in 2019 when they broke into the top five. At the tournament held in Budapest, Hungary, they defeated the Philippines in the round of 32 and Poland in the round of 16 before falling to eventual bronze medallists Italy in the quarterfinals. Hong Kong, China went on to beat Germany and the Republic of Korea in classification matches to finish fifth.

In continental competition, Hong Kong, China have been increasingly competitive in recent years. They have reached the podium at the three most recent Asian championships, winning a silver and two bronze medals. They have also won medals at each Asian Games since 2006, one silver and three bronze.
