General Interest

General
Germany last qualified a men's foil team to the Olympic Games in 2012. At those Games in London, they won a bronze medal after defeating the Russian Federation in the quarterfinals and then losing to Japan in extra-time in the semifinals. The bronze came relatively easily, though, with the United States of America providing little challenge in losing the contest 45-27. The London Games podium was Germany's third, added to a gold win in 1992 in Barcelona and a bronze in Berlin in 1936.

They won their place in Tokyo thanks to being the top-ranked European team outside the top-four on the 2020/21 list, their ranking of 10th in the world enough to earn a slot in Japan.

Germany have seen periods of sustained success at the world championships, most notably between 2002 and 2011 when they won eight medals across nine editions of the event. Only one was gold, however, adding it to the other the team won at the 1993 edition. In recent years, podiums have been elusive, with the team finishing 15th in 2018 and eighth in 2019.

A runner-up finish at the 2019 European Championships was Germany's ninth medal at continental level, and their highest rank at the championships since winning gold in 2013.
