General Interest

General
Ukraine guaranteed their place at the 2020 Olympic Games as one of the world's top-four ranked nations. Tokyo will be their fourth consecutive Olympic appearance since making their debut in the event at the 2004 Games in Athens. They finished fifth and seventh at the 2004 and 2008 Games, respectively, and achieved their best result last time out in 2016. In Rio, the team finished just outside the medals following a narrow defeat to Hungary in the bronze medal match.

Ukraine won their only world title at the 2015 World Championships in Moscow, defeating the Republic of Korea in the final. Their best world championship performance since then came at the most recent edition in 2019, when they were beaten finalists against France, 45-37. They also won world championship silver in 2013 and consecutive bronze medals in 2005 and 2006.

At continental level the team have won nine medals at the European championships this century, but only one gold, in 2001. Ukraine have been unable to reach the podium at the two most recent editions of the tournament, and finished ranked 10th at the 2019 European Championships in Dusseldorf.
