General Interest

General
Three-time Olympic medallists in the men's team epee event, Switzerland's appearance at Rio 2016 was their first Olympic Games since 1988. In Rio they were eliminated by Italy in the quarterfinals, then went on to place sixth following classification matches against the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea. Switzerland qualified for the 2020 Games in Tokyo as one of the top-four ranked teams in the world.

The team's three Olympic medals, one silver and two bronze, were won between 1952 and 1976. They then finished ninth and fifth at the 1984 and 1988 Games, respectively, before their 28-year absence from the Olympic competition.

The Swiss men went nearly 30 years without a world championship medal after they claimed silver in 1982, but won bronze in 2011, and have followed that up with podium finishes at the last five editions of the tournament between 2014 and 2019. They were crowned world champions for the first time at the 2018 World Championships in Wuxi, People's Republic of China, with victory over the Korean team in the gold medal match. At the 2019 edition they lost to eventual champions France in the semifinals before overcoming the Chinese team to secure third.

Following a run of three consecutive European titles from 2012 to 2014, Switzerland's form has dropped off slightly at the tournament, with the team's last European championship medal a bronze in 2015.
