General Interest

General
The ROC qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo as the top-ranked European team outside the world's top four nations. Previously, the Russian Federation competed in the event at three Olympic Games between 1996 and 2016, during which time they won one medal, a silver, at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Prior to its dissolution, the Soviet Union took part in the event at seven Olympic Games, winning five medals but never reaching the top step of the podium.

The Russian Federation were crowned world champions in 2003. Their next podium finishes at the world championships were back-to-back bronze medals in 2017 and 2018, but they slipped down the ranking list to seventh at the 2019 edition in Budapest following a quarterfinal loss to the Chinese team. The Soviet Union enjoyed considerable success on the world championship stage, winning seven titles at the tournament, including on their final appearance in 1991.

The Russian team has won the last three titles at the European championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019, beating Ukraine, France and Denmark in the final, respectively.
