General Interest

General
Japan qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games as hosts and will be making their first Olympic appearance in men's team epee in Tokyo.

The Japanese team are yet to win a medal at the world championships. They were eliminated in the round of 16 at the last two editions of the tournament in 2018 and 2019, losing to Hungary and Israel, respectively. They went on to secure ninth-place finishes at both editions following the classification rounds, which represents their best result in the tournament to date.

Since 2014 Japan have only failed to reach the podium at the Asian championships on one occasion, finishing fifth in 2018. They were crowned Asian champions in 2016 and took bronze at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2019. They have also finished on the podium at the last three editions of the Asian Games, including their first gold medal at the Games in 2018, as they defeated the People's Republic of China in the final in Indonesia.
