France's tally of nine gold medals in team epee is the most of any nation at the Olympic Games. Their total of 17 overall medals is also better than any other team has managed in the event at the Olympic Games. France have won the past three Olympic titles, and last failed to finish on the podium in 1992 when they placed fourth.

The French team guaranteed their place at the 2020 Olympic Games as one of the world's top four ranked teams. At the 2016 Games in Rio, they defeated Venezuela and Hungary on route to the gold medal match against Italy, where they claimed their ninth Olympic title with a 45-31 victory.

France are similarly strong at the world championships, and have won nine world titles from 13 appearances since 2005. In 2015 the team failed to win a medal at the world championships for the first time since 2003, but bounced back to claim the Olympic gold medal in 2016 and the world title in 2017. After ranking fourth in 2018, the French team reclaimed the world championship title in 2019 with a 45-37 triumph over Ukraine in the final in Budapest.
