General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China are competing in their fifth Olympic Games and are still searching for their first Olympic medal in the event. They qualified for Tokyo through the world rankings, filling the last available spot as a result of no African team being ranked in the world's top 16.

The Chinese team achieved their best result at the Olympic Games when they made their last appearance, on home soil in 2008. In Beijing they lost a tight semifinal to Poland by a one-point margin, before being defeated in the bronze medal match by Italy to rank fourth. They finished sixth on debut at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, with their other two appearances seeing them place 11th in Sydney in 2000 and seventh at Athens 2004.

It is a similar story at the world championships for the People's Republic of China, where the team are yet to secure a podium finish in the event. However, they achieved their best result of fourth at the most recent edition of the tournament. At the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, they beat Colombia, the US team and the Russian Federation, but came unstuck against Ukraine in the semifinals and lost to Switzerland in the bronze medal match.

The Chinese team have enjoyed more success at continental level. They won back-to-back titles at the Asian championships in 2018 and 2019, and finished as runners-up behind Japan at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
