His step-grandmother Tatyana Samusenko was a fencer. She represented the Soviet Union at four editions of the Olympic Games between 1960 and 1972, winning three gold medals in team foil. (SportsDeskOnline, 21 Jun 2017; denik.cz, 19 Jun 2012)

He began fencing at age eight. (redbull.com, 09 Jun 2015)
:
He played basketball when he was younger but sometimes he would not touch the ball during a match. His mother then took him to a fencing club. "Never before had I heard of fencing and had no idea. Mum just said one day we were going to practice, so I went. At first I didn't even enjoy fencing that much, because you don't even fence for the first year. At the beginning we focused on physical training, we played floorball, and at the end we practised fencing legs for twenty minutes, which looks a bit like ballet. I hadn't seen it anywhere until then, but my friend Martin Curda and I looked at each other and looked forward to playing floorball again." (denikn.cz, 11 Jun 2020; munimedia.cz, 12 Apr 2011)
