ACADEMIC AMBITION
In 2020 he used the enforced lockdown caused by COVID-19 to focus on his degree in medicine. He hopes to graduate after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I have done something that I had not done for a long time, that is, I put the university [studies] in the foreground so I hope to be able to graduate shortly after the Olympics in 2021. By studying a lot in these months and maybe at the beginning of the next sporting year, I should be well advanced. I am devoting myself a lot to studying. It has been a long time since I did this and I get a lot of satisfaction from it. I'm prouder of what I have accomplished from an academic point of view than of what I have accomplished in sports. What I have accomplished in my academic career is nothing to what I have achieved in fencing of course, but I am really proud of it because it's a result of all my sacrifices." STOLEN MEDAL
In October 2016, after falling asleep on a train to Turin, his Olympic gold medal was stolen from his backpack, and was later found in a heap of garbage outside a train station by a local woman who connected with him via social media. "I'm really happy. Even though I'd come to terms with losing the medal, it was like a part of me had been taken away. I asked her to kindly send a photo of it first.
