His father Yuichi Shikine represented Japan in fencing at world championship level and has served as head coach of the Japan national fencing team. His brother Akihiro Shikine competed in the sport at the 2012 World Cadet Championships in Moscow, Russian Federation, while his mother Naoko was a fencer at national level.
