The youngest of four children, he began riding at age five on a Shetland pony called Mickey Mouse. He then joined the Forest Hills Pony Club in New South Wales, Australia, and took part in all activities from mounted games to equestrian jumping and eventing. He played junior representative rugby alongside eventing and was unsure which sport to pursue as he got older. Watching the World Equestrian Games [WEG] in England as a teenager helped him decide. "After spending six months in the UK playing horses, I decided to stick with horses." (shanerose.com.au, 12 Nov 2015; Equestrian Australia, 01 Jan 2011)

"I can do everything 100% perfectly and still have an accident because I've got something under me that can think for itself. I have to have 100% faith in my horse. My horse has to have 100% faith in what I am telling him to do." (theaustralian.com.au, 20 May 2016)

General Interest

General
STABLES
He and his wife Niki run the Bimbadeen Park equestrian facility in Werombi, NSW, Australia. They offer breaking and pre-training of racehorses, and also breed, train, and compete horses in eventing. "I love my horses but I look at them as a way of getting me to the Olympics. They're not really for sale, but hypothetically, if I sold the two horses for one million dollars each I could be sitting at home with two million dollars. But I wouldn't be at the Olympics, and I would rather have my horses than the money. You can't buy the opportunity to go to an Olympic Games." (Facebook page, 19 Apr 2021; johntapp.racing, 01 Oct 2019; theaustralian.com.au, 20 May 2016; shanerose.com.au, 31 Dec 2015)

REMOTE COACHING
He uses video and phone technology to take advantage of remote coaching, which allows him to receive advice and training from coaches based in different parts of the world. "Being on a horse property, we need to be in a rural areas. We athletes are all based in different areas - it's not like swimming where we can all go and train in one location. We have to have our own horses on our own property, so we're using technology to send images of me training directly to a coach who is watching it on a screen, who can then give me direct feedback. I can be having this conversation with someone in Belgium or Germany, so I can utilise the world's best coaches in their location and not have to travel our horse around. I think it's going to give us a big advantage leading towards [the 2020 Olympic Games in] Tokyo." (NSW Institute of Sport YouTube channel, 07 Apr 2019)

OLYMPIC HORSE FAREWELL
In November 2020 his horse All Luck died at age 26 in Australia. Rose rode All Luck on the Australian eventing team that won silver at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. "Lucky was as good as they get, he was a complete athlete. He had very good paces on the flat, [he was] careful and brave in his jumping and so very trainable with a super attitude. Around the stables he was a complete gentleman." (horseandhound.co.uk, 04 Nov 2020; equestrianlife.com.au, 04 Nov 2020)

OLYMPIC HARD LUCK
He was selected for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta with his horse Mr Joe Cool, but was unable to compete after the animal went lame in the United States of America just before the Games. He also missed the 2012 Olympic Games in London after his horse Taurus sustained a shoulder injury at the start of the competition. (shanerose.com.au, 31 Dec 2015; heraldsun.com.au, 22 Jul 2012; news.com.au, 20 Apr 2008)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
In 2017 he began serving as president of Eventing New South Wales in Australia. (eventingnsw.equestrian.org.au, 29 Oct 2019; equestrian.org.au, 29 Jan 2019)
