Milestones

He claimed gold in individual eventing at both the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He was the third eventing rider in history to win two consecutive individual gold medals at the Olympic Games after Charles Pahud de Mortanges [1928, 1932] and Mark Todd [1984, 1988]. (SportsDeskOnline, 31 Jul 2018; animoitalia.com, 23 Aug 2016)

In 2012 he became the first eventing rider to hold the Olympic, European and world titles at the same time. In May 2016 he became the first German rider to win the Badminton Horse Trials in England. His victory meant he followed in the footsteps of British rider Pippa Funnell in securing the Rolex Grand Slam, having already triumphed at the events in Burghley in England and Kentucky in the United States of America.
