:
He first tried the sport in grade two of primary school. He began eventing in 2015, having previously competed in equestrian jumping. (Japan Equestrian Federation YouTube channel, 12 Jul 2020; telegraph.co.uk, 02 May 2019; company.jra.jp, 01 Oct 2018)
:
He was encouraged to try riding by the coach of his older sister. He made the switch to eventing from equestrian jumping because there was a lack of eventing riders in Japan ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "We do have many international Japanese [showjumping] riders who are based in Europe but we didn't have eventing riders there. Eventing offered more opportunities for me to get a seat for the 2020 Games. It's been a good move. I also like eventing people, who are kind, friendly, and funny."
