Born in Yulin, People's Republic of China, he represented his country of birth until his retirement from international competition in 2014. He returned to the sport in 2017 and began competing for Australia as a naturalised athlete in 2019. "There are some positive and some negative reports on my decision. I don't expect everyone to understand me, but every individual has the right to choose the way he or she wants to go.
