After a long period of injuries, which included back and shoulder problems, in July 2019 he returned to major international competition at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. (dsc1898.de, 17 Jul 2019; sportbuzzer.de, 10 Jul 2019)

In November 2016 he had shoulder surgery. He returned to non-water based training in early 2017 but was forced to take another break due to pain in his shoulder in March 2017. As a result of the injury he was unable to compete at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. He made his comeback in October 2017 at the Methodik Trophy in Leipzig, Germany.
