General
TIME IN JAPAN
He has spent time in Japan competing on the keirin circuit. "It's nice to get something from this completely different culture and you get a lot of respect as a keirin rider. I also love to exercise outside for a while. Riding and training in Europe a lot on the same tracks and as a member of the national team I always saw the same faces, so that variety is welcome. You give a press conference in advance [of the race] to the Japanese press. There is a channel called 'Keirin TV' and a lot of newspapers in which you regularly see your photo between the Japanese characters. In your interview you talk about what your tactics will be. Something like that wouldn't occur at a World Cup event or at the Olympic Games. For example, you say that you intend to push immediately, or that you want to sit on the wheel of [fellow Dutch track cyclist] Theo Bos to beat him in the last few metres. People [in Japan] can bet on that tactic." (knwu.nl, 01 Jan 2018)
