She began track cycling in 2009 with the Drammen CK club in Norway, having tried a number of sports. "Gymnastics and kickboxing were two of my shorter careers. I was swimming for quite some time. I have always enjoyed cross-country skiing and hiking, but only on an exercise level. There was also a little outdoor cycling." (anitastenberg.com, 12 Jul 2021)

"It was my spinning instructor who encouraged me to use the bike outside. He probably didn't think there was any point in me sitting inside an almost empty spinning hall on a lovely summer's day. I joined Drammen CK, and was introduced to the cycling community. In the summer of 2009, our team leader asked if I was interested in trying my hand at track. I was good at short paces, and since I had lost the road championship because of a nasty fall, this was an ideal opportunity." (anitastenberg.com, 12 Jul 2021)

TRAINING CHALLENGES
She says the shutdown of competition for the COVID-19 pandemic worked in her favour as it offered an opportunity for an extended training period. During the pandemic, she spent most of her time training on the Spanish island of Mallorca. "I needed a longer training period, so for me it has been a good outcome. I know I lack the competitive experience, moving in a large field and feeling the shape of the others. It will be the most nerve-racking come the Olympic Games. I've only been to Norway to pick up clothes and to get a vaccine. There's a lot of training and the biggest challenge is that I have a different circadian rhythm than Spanish people in general. It's challenging and requires you to have a passion for it. I don't have any teammates, and no one I can trust or train with. The only person I can trust is my coach. You have to do all the groundwork yourself. I hope one day there will be a bigger national team. It seems nice to have someone you can share something with." (aftenposten.no, 13 Jul 2021)
