He experienced muscle problems between 2013 and 2018 that severely affected his performance on the bike. "I was in pain every day. Sure, there are always moments in training that hurt, but for me it was extreme. I had lost the desire to ride a bike. Fortunately, that is long gone, I feel very good again and want to sprint for the medals. I'm 28 years old now [speaking in 2020]. I know that this time is perhaps the last chance in my career to compete at the Olympics."
